I am on day 8 of the Minimalism Game, and so far, it has been a lot more difficult than I thought it would be. For those who aren’t familiar with the Minimalism Game, feel free to read my previous post to get caught up.

I don’t want to make this too long, but here are a few thoughts from the first week.

I did not expect that the action of throwing things away would use up so much mental energy. I knew that I would of course need to expend energy in thinking about what I would be getting rid of, but I didn’t realise that with the removing of items, would come the organising of those that stayed. It’s been great to finally have an organised bed side table, however it took a good 45 minutes for me to do, and I only found 4 items to throw away (if you include a stack of papers that I no longer needed). We’ve had the busiest few months, and I am only really getting time to go through things at the end of the day, when I’m tired, and ready for bed.

There are lots of items that will require planning to donate or sell, like a bunch of mugs we no longer like, a vase that’s never been used, and textbooks that need to be sold. The rule is that items need to be out of your house by midnight, however I’m extending myself grace with things I’m giving away, so that I have an extra day to get them to the op shop or the person’s house that wants them. I don’t want to allow any additional extra time though, as I feel like in that case, the items will never leave our house.

I’ve noticed a theme of us keeping boxes for products – either for reselling purposes, or to store other things in them. The majority though, have been found just taking up space and gathering dust in drawers, cupboards, and other boxes, so I’m actively trying to find them all and recycle them.

I’m a little worried that by the end of the 30 days I won’t have anything left to get rid of, but at the same time, the real purpose behind the game was never to successfully get rid of x amount of things, but to create space in our lives to have more order, to pursue things we want to be pursuing, and also make space for the good quality items that we want to be investing in.

I would love to hear if anyone else is in the process of the Minimalism Game, and how they are finding the challenge! Please do let me know in the comments below if you have any tips for finding the time and energy to be getting rid of lots of items daily. Have a great week!
